The CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has confirmed that a moose has been sighted several times in the Thomaston area, most recently in late September within the vicinity of Route 8. While this is an incredible testament to the river's consistently rebounding health, drivers are urged to keep an eye out for the moose and use extreme caution as moose-vehicle collisions are often fatal. NPS Explore the Naugatuck! Event Press Release

Explore the Naugatuck! Cycling Event was a grand-slam success on September 23rd. On a perfectly beautiful fall day, the peloton of 40 cheerful cyclists safely rode 56 miles from Torrington to Derby, stopping for 20- to 30-minute press events in 11 towns and cities and a Corps of Engineers Dam and Recreation Area. The 12-hour event ran on time except for a 90-minute stretch during midafternoon.  Event highlights and achievements included:
  • Six mayors, four first selectmen and the operations manager of the Corps of Engineers dam served as emcees.
  • John Monroe, NPS, presented a two-by-four-foot poster to each chief elected official on behalf of Secretary Salazar and the National Park Service.
  • 600 commemorative buttons were distributed.
  • US Representative Rosa DeLauro spoke at the Naugatuck press event, as did several state representatives and senators and the director of a regional planning council.
  • A free-lance photographer shot more than 2,000 images of the day, a film crew from Naugatuck Valley Community College shot all the press events, and a professional film crew shot the cyclists on the road.  (Stay tuned for pictures and video from the event!)
  • Eight police departments and a state trooper provided escorts and traffic control.
  • Communities provided the cyclists with refreshments and hospitality.
  • Class Cycles provided a support van and two mechanics pro bono. The event ran smoothly for the cyclists thanks to Greg and Robert who fixed flats and replaced tires like magicians.
  • Daley Moving provided a moving van and crew at cost.
  • Valley Chamber of Commerce arranged dinners for the cyclists with Super Sandwiches of Shelton.
  • A companion event from 10 to 2, Waterbury On Wheels organized by the Y, the City and many partners, was a huge success. Vehicles were blocked from the downtown Green area so kids could ride bikes in a car-free zone. The Y and Wal-mart distributed 100 free bicycles and helmets to deserving kids. A sculptor demonstrated his craft using scrap metal from bikes. The partners raised $17,000 to cover the cost of that event. Our cyclists posed for a group photo with the kids and their bikes.
Thank you to everyone who helped to make the event
such a tremendous success!
